Mool and gotra in Maithil marriage: a simple guide for families

By Vipul Chaudhary · Updated · 2 min read

In a Maithil marriage, gotra and mool are checked before anything else. The gotra is the family's rishi lineage, and a bride and groom of the same gotra cannot marry. The mool is the village the family's first known ancestor came from, and it lets a Panjikar trace relations on both the father's and mother's side.

What is gotra?

Gotra (गोत्र) is the rishi clan a family descends from in the male line. Two people of the same gotra are treated as related, so same-gotra marriage is not allowed in Maithil tradition. Common Maithil gotras include Shandilya, Kashyap, Vatsa, Bharadwaj, Parashar, Katyayan, Kaushik and Savarna [VERIFY full list with a Panjikar].

Spellings vary a lot — Sandilya, Shandilya and शांडिल्य are the same gotra. The 7phere Mool–Gotra check folds these spellings together so a clash is not missed.

What is mool?

Mool (मूल) is the village of origin of the Biji Purush, the earliest known ancestor of the family. A Maithil family introduces itself as "mool + gotra" — for example, "[MOOL] mool, Shandilya gotra". Each mool is divided into sub-clans called moolgram, and the villages the family later spread to are its shakha.

Mools were traditionally grouped in ranks — Atyant Shrestha, Dwitiya Shreni and Madhyam mool — and Maithil Brahmins were grouped as Shrotriya (Soit), Yogya (Bhalmanush), Panjibaddh and Jaiwar. Families today vary in how much weight they give these.

Why does the mother's side matter?

The mother's side matters because the Panji tracks marriages, not just surnames. A Panjikar checks about seven generations on the father's side and five to six on the mother's side. That is why a good profile records the mool of the mother, the dadi (father's mother) and the nani (mother's mother).

Which pairs does the free 7phere check flag?

The free check uses only what families enter. It is a pre-check, not a Siddhant.

Situation Result
Same gotra Not suitable — hidden from suggestions
Same mool Not suitable — likely the same lineage
One side's mother's mool = other side's mool Check with a Panjikar
Both mothers, both dadis or both nanis share a mool Check with a Panjikar
Different Vedic branch (Vajasaneyi / Chandogya) Check with your family

Where does the final answer come from?

The final answer always comes from a Panjikar. Once both families accept a match on 7phere, the Siddhant tab opens and you can ask a Panjikar to check the real Panji records. Read how Siddhant works and what Panji Prabandh is.

Frequently asked questions

Can people of the same gotra marry in Mithila?

No. In Maithil tradition, a bride and groom of the same gotra are treated as related through the same rishi lineage, so same-gotra marriage is not allowed.

What is mool in Maithil culture?

Mool (मूल) is the village the family's first known ancestor, the Biji Purush, came from. Maithil families introduce themselves by mool and gotra together.

Is the mother's mool checked too?

Yes. The Panjikar's Siddhant check traces maternal lines as well, so the mools of the mother, the father's mother (dadi) and the mother's mother (nani) matter. 7phere asks for these to run a free pre-check.

What are the main gotras of Maithil Brahmins?

Common Maithil gotras include Shandilya, Kashyap, Vatsa, Bharadwaj, Parashar, Katyayan, Kaushik and Savarna. A full list should be confirmed with a Panjikar. [VERIFY full list]

What are Vajasaneyi and Chandogya?

They are the two Vedic branches among Maithil Brahmins: Vajasaneyi (Yajurvedi), the majority, and Chandogya (Samavedi), about a quarter. Traditionally families marry within their own branch.

Does 7phere check mool and gotra automatically?

Yes. 7phere runs a free Mool–Gotra check on every suggested match and hides same-gotra and same-mool pairs. It is a pre-check from what families enter; the final word is the Panjikar's Siddhant.
