Saurath Sabha explained: Mithila's marriage assembly, then and now

By Vipul Chaudhary · Updated · 2 min read

Saurath Sabha is the traditional marriage assembly of Maithil Brahmins, held at Saurath village near Madhubani, Bihar, every year in the months of Jyeshtha and Ashadha. Families of brides and grooms meet in a large orchard, matchmakers called ghataks help them talk, and Panjikars on site confirm that the two families are not related.

Where and when is Saurath Sabha held?

Saurath Sabha is held at Saurath, about 6 km north-east of Madhubani, in an orchard of about 22 bighas said to have been donated by the Maharaja of Darbhanga. It runs once or twice a year for 7 to 15 auspicious days in Jyeshtha and Ashadha, on dates Mithila's pandits fix from the panchang.

How did the Sabha begin?

The Sabha began with the Panji Prabandh system. King Harisimha Deva approved 14 villages for public marriage assemblies so that a bride's father could meet grooms' families openly. Saurath became the oldest and best known; Sasaula, near Sitamarhi, is the only other one still active.

How did it work?

The Sabha worked like an open market of alliances, run on trust:

  • Each village had its own camp, called a dera.
  • The bride's father or guardian looked for a groom with relatives and a ghatak (matchmaker).
  • Every match needed an Asvajan Patra from a Panjikar — the Siddhant.
  • Women traditionally did not attend.

Where does Saurath Sabha stand today?

Saurath Sabha still happens, but mostly as a ceremony. The 2025 edition was inaugurated on 28 May 2025, and coverage described it as continuing "amid dwindling relevance". Families have moved to cities and abroad, and most matches now start on phones.
